El Camino Correcto
Nuestro sistema mundial de produccion de alimentos esta destruyendo la misma fundacion sobre la cual fue creado. Las tecnicas, innovaciones y practicas que han permitido incremento en produccion tambien han debilitado la infraestructura de esa productividad. Hemos degradado y gastado los recursos naturales de los cuales la agricultura depende - la tierra, el agua y la diversidad genetica natural. Tambien hemos creado una dependencia de fuentes de energia no renovables y un sistema que cada vez mas le quita la responsabilidad de producir alimento a los agricultores, quienes estan en la mejor posicion para velar por la conservacion de el medio ambiente. En sintesis, la agricultura moderna no es sostenible - no puede continuar produciendo alimento suficiente para la poblacion del planeta indefinidamente porque deteriora ella misma las condiciones que permiten que la agricultura sea posible. La definicion de "sostenibiliad" puede variar mucho, pero se esta generalmente de acuerdo que la base de la sostenibilidad es ecologica.

Creemos que la agricultura sostenible deberia considerar los siguientes puntos:

Tener efectos minimos sobre el medio ambiente
Conservacion de la tierra y prevencion de erosion
Conservacion del agua
Depender de recursos locales y no lejanos y conocer cada vez mejor el medio ambiente
Conservacion de la diversidad genetica

Diversidad Genetica
Durante los ultimos 100 años, se ha perdido mas del 80% de la diversidad genetica de especies de plantas y animales gracias a agricultura convencional y su enfasis en las ganancias a corto plazo. En la Estacion Experimental Valhalla, nos esforzamos por preservar la diversidad genetica de la especie de la macadamia. Esto significa que no injertamos nuestros arboles ni interferimos geneticamente con su desarrollo.

Seleccion en el Vivero en vez de Injertar
Se injerta, clona o de alguna manera interfiere geneticamente con los cultivos para controlar produccion y otras caracteristicas, y al hacerlos se usa una, o unas pocas, variedades. Esto efectivamente interrumpe y detiene tipicamente Typically large scale commercial food producers clone, graft or genetically modify their crops. Macadamia Trees
Macadamia nut trees have a broad and shallow root system. This helps prevent soil erosion by holding moisture in the earth. It also holds the nutrients in the soil, increasing productivity and fertility and improving soil structure. Above ground the tree's branches and leaves provide habitat for a wide array of animal life. When the tree sheds its leaves they become ground cover and decompose becoming important organic matter.

Slash and Burn Agriculture
One of the aims of the Valhalla Reforestation Project is to help put an end to slash and burn agriculture. This is an agricultural method common to many indigenous communities all over the world, including Guatemala, which contributes to global warming. Usually when there is a struggle to find land for agricultural use conservation is forgotten. Fires are set to clear forests and to enrich the soil with nutrients. This only makes the land arable for a few years. This process of slash and burn repeats itself until the soil is completely depleted of nutrients and no longer suitable for agricultural use. The land which was once an abundant forest full of diverse plant and animal life is often left devastated. This process then moves onto the next forest. This devastation is happening throughout the globe, rapidly depleting our plant and animal species.

Our Solution
Preserving the productivity of agricultural land for the future requires sustainable food production. Planting macadamia nut trees is both an agriculturally and economically sustainable alternative to slash and burn agriculture. Planting macadamia nut trees can provide indigenous communities with an income, a nutritious food source, firewood and an environmentally sustainable outlook for the future.
